The 27-year-old successfully defended her title and earned two gold medals in two attempts, having beaten all of her opponents at the Commonwealth Games 2018.
In Birmingham, however, Chanu stood head and shoulders above her competitors, accumulating a total of 201kg (88kg + 113kg) to stamp her dominance in the sport and set a Commonwealth Games record.
Marie Hanitra Roilya Ranaivosoa (172kg) of Mauritius won silver, and Hannah Kaminski of Canada took bronze (171 kg).
Chanu shattered the Commonwealth (Commonwealth Championships and CWG) and Games records in a stunning performance. She broke the Games’ clean and jerk and overall lift records.
Chanu was showered with congratulations after winning India’s first gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022, as Indians celebrated the historic event.
Chanu’s first snatch attempt was easy, and she lifted 88kg in the second before leaving 90kg for the third and final try. Despite failing to set a new personal best, she entered the clean and jerk with a 12kg edge against Ranaivosoa.
Chanu lifted 109kg easily on her first effort before attempting 113kg on her second. She didn’t want to risk breaking her world record of 119kg, so she tried for 115 kg on her final lift, but she missed.
Who is Mirabai Chanu?
Chanu Saikhom Mirabai, also known as Mira Bai Chanu, is a 26-year-old weightlifter from Manipur. She was born on August 8, 1994, and has been a strong presence in international tournaments in the 48 kg category since 2014, having previously won the World Championships and many gold at the Commonwealth Games. She is also a Padma Shri awardee and received the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award from the government in 2018 for her contributions to sports.
